I stare into the void that is the sewers, listening to what Brayden is saying. He’s right something is going on down there. I shift my gaze to my boots. I’m not going in there.
Of course he’d be impressed if I do. I’d go into the sewers if Stella was here. But Dad won’t let me take her. She’s not my dog he always tells me. That gives me an idea, “I need to go take Stella for a walk.” I lie. “See you guys at the party tonight?” I leave the sewer door and walk upstairs.
Dad wasn’t thrilled when Amber put us in The Pharmacy, I had an idea why, but I didn’t ask. He’s been strange since coming back. Giving up his job as sheriff didn’t help. I kept a close eye on him, he didn’t seem like he was drinking, he didn’t really leave the mall. But what he did while I was at school, that was up to him.
He was laying in bed when I walked in, “Hey Dad, it’s Halloween!” I announce. That caused Stella to perk up from his lap, but she quickly lowered her head back down. At this point going down into the sewers seemed easier. “How do you know if a boy likes you?” I hear myself blurting out.
That caused him to shoot up like a bolt of lighting.
I can’t believe what I’m hearing, Luna likes a boy or thinks a boy likes her. Either way I was not ready for this talk with my daughter. Some punk kid has no idea the world of trouble he’s just found himself in.
“Are you sure your old enough for boys?” I wish Zan was here, she’d know what to say. Shipping her off to Tai is only an option if I want her to hate me, but that’s still a better option then a boy. I catch her rolling her eyes. Time to play parent I guess.
“Come on.” I motion for her to sit next to me on the bed which she does. “Who is it? What delinquent has your eye?”
I notice her blush and then a smile. It’s a look I’m sure many a girl had made about me. Suddenly I’m seeing all my antics from my parents perspective. Why couldn’t I have been a nerd?
I also didn’t expect to hear the name “Brayden.” Escape her lips. Sure Bray and I have worked out most of our issues but at the end of the day it’s still Bray, and I’m sure some of his high horse, holier then thou DNA was passed on to his Spawn.
“He dared me to go into the sewer.” Luna admits and I get the feeling the next words out of her mouth are going to cause me to smash Romeo into a pulp. “I didn’t, but I want to prove I’m not a wimp. You’ll help me right?”
She looks despite and slightly innocent with just enough of my scheming DNA. I want to say no, but it’s also nice to be needed and that Luna came to me. “What’s the plan?”
