“Then we will make it happen.” i answer a bit proud. Before i can say more Eve steps in, introduce herself to Jessi. I give her an annoyed look.
Eve
" Welcome, i am Eve." i smile back at her. Of course i noticed the look Devon is giving me. Seems like i have found a nerv. I also smile at him. " So you are helping out at the farm then?" i ask Jessi while my eyes are still meeting Devons
I smiled over at Devon and nodded my head excited. “Amazing! Thank you so much, it would be so much fun!” I smiled brightly almost bouncing on my feet.
I saw the boy and girl look at each other but I couldn’t pick up on anything there what it could mean. I instead focused on Eve speaking to me. I blush lightly glancing a bit over at Devon "Um yeah it looks like it. I would be honored to help out anyway I can"
Luna hands me Fenella and she walks off. I feel someone put a hand on my shoulder.
Bo says something to me and I feel caught completely off guard. ”What…I…I…I’ve never kissed a boy”
Oh crap, that was an epic fail. I watch as Sabrina takes off as well. The kiss and my big mouth scared her away, oops a daisy!!! Go Bo Bo!
I smile at Jessi who is in deep conversation with Devon, and now another girl is also present whose name I do not know. I wasn’t going to interrupt, 1 because I wanted Jessi to meet new people, and 2 if I did they might all walk away. I snort a little. Dyson looks up at me.
Dyson then looks back away and is becoming rather inquisitive again as he starts to sniff around him. I know exactly what he can smell. I spot Genesis by the food. I don’t recognise the cute looking lad with her.
I hardly knew Genesis, but she seemed to like Dyson and always has treats in her pocket. If we ever see her when we are out for walkies she is ever so good with him and gives him a treat. Maybe I could ask her about Claire, and Dyson can get some attention that he is dying for?
"Come on Dyson, let’s get you a treat and I fancy some chips too. This is meant to be a celebration after all." As I walk over to Genesis, I give Jessi a little wave and indication of where I am going. I am not too sure if she noticed as her eyes are melting talking to Devon.
I slow my pace when I hear Sabrina heading my direction. I let her get next to me and match her pace. I see Gigi and motion to the teachers lounge so she’ll know we’re ready when she is.
I look ahead again and see Luna go into the girls bathroom. I sigh knowing that that means she wants me to leave her alone. More than likely she’ll leave before the rest of us and I’ll have to fill her in later.
“You alright, Sabrina?” I ask quietly. “You look completely frazzled by all of that.” @Eagle@Patch
As I’m trying to hold some sort of conversation with Liam, trying to get to know him to form better opinions of his aloofness, I see a dog in my peripheral and its owner.
“Oy you, rascal,” I scratch Dyson behind the ears as he reaches me. “Come looking for a snack, have you?” I pat him before giving him the chip I’m about to eat. “Sorry boy, these dungarees don’t got the goods today. Not that he minds the human food, right?” I give Bo my attention now.
“I uh, saw the missing posters. I presume they’re your doing?” I lift a brow in question. It’s no secret to her I’m not a Claire fan, but I sure as hell hope she knows I wouldn’t wish her disappearance.
CORIN:
Standing at the end of the long table, I heap some mashed potatoes into the plate I’m holding along with a variety of other good looking foods.
The kids really went the extra mile to make this a fun party.
I have a pang of guilt about how much food is on my plate…we should be rationing this I think to myself.
Wendy appears beside me and scoffs at my plate.
“Hungry, are you?” She asks accusingly…
“It’s for us both” I quickly say, smiling my best smile at her.
“So we could just go on into the meeting…I didn’t see you so…”
I trail off, clearly not convincing my cousin, but she plays along and grabs a carrot off “our plate”
And crunching it please try between her teeth.
“Fine then, let’s go have this meeting…you’re about to become the Least popular guy in school.”
She tells me and walks towards the teachers lounge, where we expect to see anyone who’s stepped into a leadership role within their households
Getting to Genesis happened quicker than I had anticipated but what did I expect with Mr Dyson pulling me along, he was hungry. I smile as Genesis gives him a chip as she informs him/us that she has no treats today. I nod that it is fine for him to have some human food. There are somethings I know he can’t have but a few chips won’t hurt.
Genesis focuses now on me, I pick up another chip and shove it in Dyson’s mouth as she discusses the ‘missing’ posters. “Yes, I put them up this morning after not seeing her for over 48 hours, it’s not like her to just vanish without telling me first.” I can see Dyson looking up at me, I quickly give him one last chip. "She could well be trapped somewhere, but I just have a bad feeling inside. Her bed is made, everything is in it’s place. I feel like someone has taken her? She either went willingly or they covered there tracks leaving her place immaculate!"
I spot Corin for the first time tonight, I think he must be heading to the meeting part of tonight. I didn’t want Genesis to miss it, but at least I got the chance to express my feelings before she attends. I sigh and say, “You best get to the meeting, thank you for listening!” I pat Dyson on his head who is panting away. Me thinks he had one to many chips, now he needs some water.
I catch the eye of Prometheus, I think he’s warning me of the meeting, but I hang back to listen to Bo, nodding back to him in acknowledgment. I’m curious as to how this sister of my nemesis since starter school found out about the disappearance. I guess I’m hoping she’s not really missing because that scares me and will scare the residents of this town and cause a panic.
Bo explains why she put up the posters and the details give me goose flesh. It’s like Claire has vanished without a trace. Maybe she just decided to leave without telling anyone? Or she knew the person who took her. Whichever the case, it was apparent to me, we were no longer safe in our quiet, little town.
“I’ll join any search party you organize,” I tell her as she sends me off to the meeting. “She’s not my favorite person, but she’s apart of this community.” I awkwardly squeeze one of her hands before giving Dyson a parting rub and head for the teacher’s lounge.
“I’m here, sorry.” I mumble my apologies, hoping I wasn’t the hold up. I still regret becoming some sort of leadership figure because if there’s anything more I hate than a big crowd, it is an intimate one.
I look around as I walk and decide I’m going to get something to eat. Those sausage rolls look good. I don’t realise until Prometheus starts talking to me that I stood near him. ”Yeah…yeah I’m fine, I think in just going to get something to eat before the meeting” I try to shake myself out of what just happened and start bouncing Fenella to the music again. I stop and roll my eyes when I see Corin loading his plate full of food. I decide not to be concerned with him for now. I just wanted to enjoy myself and enjoy the food. Make my way toward the paper plates only to annoy myself greatly realising I’m not going to be able to pick it up while I’m holding Fenella. Feeling defeated I go toward the cocktail Frankfurt’s and with difficulty and a lot of positioning I pick up one and slink away from the table feeling embarrassed about how stupid I would have looked just then. I’ll just get food at home.
I could have asked Luna I just didn’t see or even think to where she went.
Sabrina walks away with her sister after assuring me that she is alright. I don’t believe her but now isn’t the time for that. I look at the food think for a moment but I’m not very hungry. I see Pre… Corin has loaded his plate. I go ahead and tell myself his cousin is here and he’s getting food for both of them.
I’m more concerned about Luna. Even though she just met Sabrina today, she has a hard crush. Never seen her fall so quick and then that display from Bo. That had to hurt.
I make my way over when I see Sabrina look around.
“If you’re looking for Luna, she went to the ladies room.”
I sign to Genesis thank you after her kind words as she takes off for the meeting. I know her and my sister had their problems but I really hope me and her get can get along. I was nothing like Claire, so watch this space.
Standing alone I decide to fill a plate of food for Jessi and her new friends. I didn’t feel hungry at all. Dyson and I head over to them with a nice full plate.
"Here you go guys. I didn’t want you to go without. It seems a lot of people are going up for food." Holding Dyson’s lead in one hand and the plate in the other I struggle but I manage a little wave to the girl who is stood with Jessi and Devon. *“Hi, I am Bo and my dog is Dyson!” I was hoping one of them would take the plate of food and start sharing it around them.
I didn’t notice that Bo and Dyson had made their way where I was standing with Devon and Eve so I was a bit startled. I looked at Bo and gave her a bright smile “Wow, thank you Bo that’s very kind of you” looking at the plate almost made my stomach growl in hunger. I was really hungry by it was now it was starting to kick in, I gently took the plate and gently started to eat a little before I offered it too Devon and Eve as well.
Another girl joins us, introduce herself as Bo… and Dyson. I swallow and look at the dog again. Slowly i made a step back and half behind Devon. " Hy, i am Eve… sorry i am not that much into dogs."
Devon
Bo and her dog steps closer and i notice Eve stepping behind me. I also made a step closer to her, showing that i am there if needed.
My stomach drops when Prometheus tells me where Luna is. It’s the last person I want to see considering what’s just happened. ”Thanks” I give Prometheus a smile and walk over to the girls toilets. ”Luna”
Taking the plate out of Corin’s hands and munching on a carrot I turn and lead the way towards the teachers lounge. Once we arrive I find a seat at one of the round tables filling the majority of the space, preferring to eat at a table, though I eye the comfortable looking leather couch thinking that I might want to sit on later.
The rest of the room has the types of things you would expect to find in a teachers break room. A place to eat, containing a kitchenette and round tables with hard backed chairs. Refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, sink and dishwasher. Cupboards full of plates and such…a place to escape for half an hour from the daily mania of a schoolhouse.
As Corin follows me inside I set the plate down on the table and make my way towards the coffee pot. I rummage in the cupboard above the machine and I’m ecstatic to find an unopened bag of coffee grounds and some powdered creamer.
I pull my shoulder bag off and put the treasures inside.
I feel a pang if guilt about taking it, but we haven’t staked out any proprietary rules about foraging food from buildings, and I’ll take advantage of that loophole as long as I can.
Corin eyes me in irritation but holds his tongue. He’s planning on talking to everyone about rationing and communal living tonight, and we have some differences of opinions in the whole situation…so for both our sakes we’ve agreed to disagree about my tendency to scavenge.
I look over my shoulder as a few people come in behind us and take seats at the tables with their meals.
I discreetly close my bag and return to my seat, taking another carrot from the plate that’s situated between Corin and I, giving him a cheeky smile. He turns and looks at the door, ignoring me.
I lean forward and pull the plate fully in front of me, taking more bites from the various dishes provided by the kids in town.
last meal before the rationing police take control I think, annoyed but resolved that it was bound to happen sooner or later.
Genesis arrives and I stand up, leaving Wendy alone at the table. I step close to Genesis, smiling at her.
“You’re not late. We just got here as well. You look nice“ I say, my smile widening. I resist the urge to run my fingers through my hair. I stuff my hands inside my pockets instead and raise my shoulders, rocking back on my heels.
“Will you sit with us?” I ask, with a small jerk of my head towards the table behind me.
I was hoping to be able to just blend into the background and maybe get a word in with Sabrina, but as soon as I arrived, that wish flew out the window. I saw Corin standing before I could even take a further step. “Oh, good.” I smile with relief, trying to remember how to breath with how close he’s standing.
“Thank you, I think,” I laugh as he pays my appearance a compliment. “I mean, I didn’t do my hair and I’d garden in this, but it’s clean” I shrug, fighting the rising blush to my cheeks. “You, don’t look so bad yourself.”
I look at the table he just abandoned as he asks me to sit with him. His cousin is there eating, a sight I’m glad to see. We rationed a lot of the harvest to preserve and dry, but we still wanted to give a good reward for everyone’s efforts. These dishes were prepared specifically for that reason to give us comfort in the wake of the nightmare we’ve been unable to wake up from.
“Okay,” I answer, feeling my palms sweat. One meeting at the cool kid’s table wouldn’t kill me, would it? “I wanted to talk to you about Claire, anyhow.”
“Claire?” I ask, my brows furrowing together. It’s not at all what I expected her to say. It’s been rather obvious that the two girls aren’t each other’s biggest fans.
“What about her?” I probe cautiously. The last thing I want her to think is that I’m at all interested in another girl. I’ve only got eyes for Genesis…that must be apparent by now, surely.
“You mean you don’t know?” I ask, stopping mid stride towards the table. “Her sister, Bo, has put up missing posters. I saw one this afternoon on my way from Devon’s.”
I look at him with sympathy, knowing I’ve probably just put more weight on him as a leader. “I spoke with Bo. It’s like Claire just vaporized into thin air.” She and I weren’t friends but even that small detail gave me goose flesh.
“It’s sure to incite some panic, which I guess in a way works for your whole communal living idea.”
I reach out, touching his forearm, “Oh God, I just played that sentence back in my head. I’m not accusing you of being involved.”
